"Efficiency: It's in our DNA" – Dyson

To learn about the importance of product materials and manufacturing processes, alongside branding and product language, Cortare was created to fit within Dyson’s current product range.

Cortare simplifies the interaction between the user, angle settings and dust extraction, to increase efficiency and decrease tooling needed for regular operation.

Research

Dyson’s branding is strongly weighed towards innovation and distinctly retrained on overall form, without sacrificing any functionality.

Currently, most brand jigsaws are incredibly versatile, however, are styled to be very robust and bulky. In contrast to Dyson’s sleek, refined aesthetic and intuitive functionality, current jigsaws require tooling and product knowledge to access its full functionality.

Model Making

Model 1

To gauge the size of the jigsaw, I built a model for the jigsaw. I quickly realised how bulky the proportions were when I made my first model, and quickly reiterated.

Model 2

The second model was made much smaller, but the proportions were much better. The second model also had interactable UI including: the switches, the angle setting and the clear guard.

From this project, I learnt why branding is so important, and how it influences design decisions. I need to reflect on the future products I am going to make and what purpose it brings to others as well as myself.
