This project aims to upcycle plastic through the creation of flat, marbled and translucent sheets as the first step towards creating a stock material for the creation of higher valued items.
With an ample supply of milk bottles, the highly accessible material was given a longer lifespan, past its initial use as a container for milk, by transforming it into a longer-lasting product; a wall light.
Our lighting solution is merely one example of a product which could be created with folded plastic sheets.
In a single morning, one Gloria Jeans store is able to consistently provide roughly 27 empty 2L bottles of milk.
Each bottle had to be cut, washed and have their labels peeled before use.
All sheets were heated and flattened using a sandwich press and thinned with a sheet metal roller.
A strip heater was used to heat a targetable area of the material. For desired aesthetics, the result could not be altered after it was folded.
This project only touched the surface towards the potential recycled plastic has a material for diffusing light. It has the potential to be coloured and maintain translucency, and give fairly consistent flat sheets with the use of a sandwich press and a metal roller.
